Building a successful business is not dependent on luck, charisma, intelligence or wealth. These things can certainly help but they are largely out of your control. I would rather focus on characteristics that I can control. These are my big 5:
Running a business will knock you down and challenge you beyond belief. The challenges will be constant and relentless. Success is determined by how you overcome these challenges. Did you learn? Did you become more resolute to seeing your vision actualised?
I am one persistent bastard. I believe so strongly in our vision that I will continue to knock on doors when others would’ve long given up. I will work long hours, travel thousands of km and still carry unwavering energy and belief. Persistence is a necessity. There are millions that dream but only the persistent turn their dreams into reality.
3. Be Nice
I know it’s hardly profound but don’t be a dickhead. Listen more than you speak. Show genuine interest, be humble, express gratitude, complement people, be authentic and you will develop outstanding relationships and trust. Both of which are central to business success.
You are absolutely more capable than you could ever imagined. The size of your belief will determine the size of your impact. Your belief should not only inspire you but others around you. It should be what drives you daily among the mire of setbacks and roller coaster of emotions you will undoubtedly encounter. Your belief will unlock creativity and you will uncover solutions that pave the way to success.
5. Seek constant improvement
Feedback is the breakfast of champions. It is the only way we can improve. In all areas of life and business seek improvement and success will be a natural byproduct if is supported by action. It may be uncomfortable, difficult to consume and challenging but the end result will be a superior product or service.
